The reality of having an ostomy is needing to change my bag. My daughter has been naturally very curious about my stoma, Oscar, and has grown up feeling my ostomy bag, the stoma underneath, and now helping me change my bag.
Having an overactive ostomy means changing my bag quite frequently, so I decided early on in my daughter’s life that she will be a part of the process.
For starters, she knows my stoma’s name is Oscar and when we watch Sesame Street and Oscar comes on she points to my belly!
Having an ostomy is about living life and this is how we live our life with an ostomy. As Taro Gomi (2001) states in Everyone Poops, “All living things eat. So, everyone poops.” Having an ostomy changes the way we think about poop and my daughter will grow up knowing that having an ostomy is a very real and normal part of life.
Happy World Ostomy Day!
